JOSÉ MARÍA PAZ GAGO

Professor of Theory of Literature and Comparative Literature at the University of La Coruña (Spain) as well as at the University of Paris 3-Sorbonne Nouvelle (2008-2012). Visiting professor at the Universities of California-Santa Bárbara, Rosario e Córdoba (Argentina), UNISINOS and Universidade de Sao Paulo (Brasil), Universidad Piloto and Universidad Autónoma de Colombia as well as Università Ca Foscari de Venecia (Italia).

He was Secretary General of the IASS/AIS between 2004 and 2014, President of the Asociación Española de Semiotica (AES) between 2000 and 2004. He is currently President of the Latin American Federation of Semiotics (FELS) and Vice President of the IASS/AIS for Europe (2019-2024).

Author of around twenty books, including Semiotics of the Quixote. Theory and practice of narrative fiction (Amsterdam & Atlanta: Rodopi, 1995); The Reception of the Poem. Pragmatics of the poetic text (Kassel: Reichenberger, 1999), The Spectacular Revolution (Madrid & Barcelona: Castalia, 2012) or The Eighth Art. Fashion in contemporary society (A Coruña: Hércules, 2016), he is a specialist in Semiotics of Cinema and Entertainment as well as in Semiotics of Fashion.

He was the scientific editor of the Fashion issue of deSignis magazine, nº 20, 2020, with Bianca Terracciano and Victoria Nanini, as well as the book The Elegance of Style. Fashion and Literature (Madrid, Pigmalion, 2024).

Director of the Master in Audiovisual and Theater Studies at the University of La Coruña (1998-2004). Co-director of the Erasmus Mundus European Master in Performing Arts / Erasmus Mundus Master in Performing Arts Studies (2010-2015), he is Principal Researcher of the Research Group on Literature and Communication Technologies (LITECOM).

PROGRAMME

My program will be developed in 4 fundamental axes:

1. Openness: we must open our discipline to other methodological and epistemic options in the human and natural sciences, by promoting a necessary scientific dialogue. If we do not do this, semiotics risks closing in on itself and becoming an autotellic science.

2. Transdisciplinarity: in this sense, it is necessary to interact with other methodological and scientific perspectives, collaborating and working together to increase knowledge, the goal of all science.

3. Decentralization: we cannot maintain a Eurocentric and centralist organization. It is necessary that the decision-making centers be in the periphery and in emerging countries such as Asia, Latin America and Africa.

  4. Renewal: it is urgent to attract young researchers to semiotics. Our discipline must not be a catalog of cryptic terms and concepts, only intelligible by a closed group of initiates. We must make ourselves understood by the younger generations and offer them methodological instruments that are both accessible and rigorous.

Il a été secrétaire général de l’IASS/AIS entre 2004 et 2014, président de l’Asociación Española de Semiótica (AES) entre 2000 et 2004. Il est actuellement Président de la Fédération Latinoaméricaine de Sémiotique (FELS) et Viceprésident de l’IASS/AIS pour l’Europe (2019-2024).

Auteur d’une vingtaine de livres, dont Sémiotique du Quichotte (Amsterdam & Atlanta: Rodopi, 1995); La réception du poème. Pragmatique du texte poétique (Kassel: Reichenberger, 1999), La révolution spectaculaire (Madrid & Barcelonne: Castalia, 2012) ou La Huitième Art. La mode dans la société contemporaine (A Coruña: Hércules, 2016), il est spécialiste en Sémiotique  du Cinèma et du Spectacle ainsi qu’en Sémiotique de la Mode.

Il a été l’éditeur scientifique du numéro sur la Mode de la revue deSignis, nº 20, 2020, avec Bianca Terracciano et Victoria Nanini, ainsi que du livre L’élégance du style. Mode et Littérature (Madrid: Pigmalion, 2024).

Directeur du Master en Études Audiovisuelles et Théâtrales de l’Université de La Coruña (1998-2004). PROGRAMME

Mon programme sera développé en 4 axes fondamentaux :

1. Ouverture : nous devons ouvrir notre discipline à d’autres options méthodologiques et épistémiques en sciences humaines et naturelles, en favorisant un nécessaire dialogue scientifique. Si nous ne le faisons pas, la sémiotique risque de se refermer sur elle-même et de devenir une science autotélique.

2. Transdisciplinarité : en ce sens, il est nécessaire d’interagir avec d’autres perspectives méthodologiques et scientifiques, en collaborant et en travaillant ensemble pour accroître la connaissance, objectif de toute science.

3. Décentralisation : nous ne pouvons pas maintenir une organisation euro-centrique et centraliste. Il faut que les centres de décision soient en périphérie et dans les pays émergents comme l’Asie, l’Amérique Latine, l’Afrique.

   4. Renouveau : il est urgent d’attirer les jeunes chercheurs vers la sémiotique. Notre discipline ne doit pas être un catalogue de termes et de concepts énigmatiques, intelligibles uniquement par un groupe fermé d’initiés. Il faut se faire comprendre des jeunes générations et leur proposer des instruments méthodologiques à la fois accessibles et rigoureux.
