Jacques Fontanille, for the position of President

Jacques Fontanille is emeritus professor of semiotics at the University of Limoges, and at the Institut Universitaire de France. He is also Honorary President of International Association of Visual Semiotics, French Association of Semiotics and Roman Federation for Semiotics.  From 2005 to 2012, he was President of the University of Limoges, and from 2012 to 2014, Chief of Staff of the French Minister of Higher Education and Research.

He published three hundred papers and books, in the fields of theoretical semiotics, literary and visual semiotics, semiotics of practices, semiotic anthropology. He published seventeen books as individual author : Le Savoir Partagé / Les espaces subjectifs / The Semiotics of Passions / Semiotica de las pasiones. El seminario / Sémiotique du visible / Tension et signification / Sémiotique et littérature / The Semiotic of discourse / Séma & Soma. Most of his books have been translated in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Korean, Arabic, etc. He was visiting professor or guest lecturer in eighty American, European, Asian and African universities. Most of his fifty former PhD students now hold faculty positions at universities in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, USA and Canada. Last but not least, he was invited to give a plenary lecture at each of the last five IASS-AIS congresses, in Nanjing, Sofia, Kaunas, Buenos Aires and Thessaloniki.

Tiziana Migliore, for the position of Secretary General

Tiziana Migliore is Associate Professor of Semiotics at the University of Urbino Carlo Bo (Italy) and member of the Umberto Eco International Centre of Semiotic Sciences based there. Vice President and Treasurer of the International Association for Visual Semiotics (IAVS-AISV), she has published the monographs La parola trasformatrice. Strutture, enunciazione, intersoggettività (Mimesis 2023), I sensi del visibile. Immagine, testo, opera (Mimesis 2018), Miroglifici: figura e scrittura in Joan Miró (Et al. 2011), Biennale di Venezia. Il catalogo è questo (Aracne 2012).

She has edited and co-edited several volumes and issues of scientific journals, including Italian Semiotics, 2 vols. (with G. Marrone, Zeitschrift fur Semiotik, 2023-24), Semiotica del formato. Misure, peso, volume, proporzioni, scala (with M. Colas-Blaise, Mimesis 2022), Images of Europe. The Union between Federation and Separation (with F. Mangiapane, Springer 2021), La competenza esperta. Tipologie e trasmissione (with G. Marrone, Meltemi 2021), The Architecture of Babel. She directs the editorial series Riflessi (Aracne Editions) and serves on the scientific boards of national and international journals. She has directed and organised many congresses, conferences and seminars in Italy and abroad.

She writes in daily newspapers Il Manifesto and La Repubblica.

Nedret Kılıçeri Öztokat, for the position of Treasurer

Nedret Kılıçeri Öztokat is Professor at Istanbul University (Department of French Language and Literature). At Istanbul University, she was successively appointed Associate Lecturer in 1997, Lecturer in 1999 and Professor in 2006.

Trained at the Greimassian school, her areas of research and teaching are literary semiotics, urban semiotics, semiotics of social and political conflicts, nineteenth-century literature, literary criticism and discourse analysis (literary, social and and visual). She founded the Sémio-IST Türkiye team. She was treasurer of the Fédération Romane de Semiotique (2019-2023), and she is currently its deputy general secretary. In 2019 in Istanbul, she organized the international congress of human and social sciences, Congist’19, on the theme of the City.

She is the author of the works: The body in the fantastic and cruel tales of Maupassant, Istanbul University Press, 2021; Approaches and methods in the analysis of literary discourse, Ed. Multilingual, Istanbul, 2005; The word of painting, An analysis of the work of B.N. İslimyeli, to be published by Sanat Kritik- İstanbul (2023). As editor: Myth, discourse and literature, Homage to Tahsin Yücel, (Editor), Editions Can, Istanbul; co-editor of Langages et sens de la ville/Languages and Meaning of the City, Istanbul University Press, 2021.

She participated in international semiotics congresses and conferences organized in France, Turkey and Italy, she published a large number of semiotic articles, she contributed to developing bachelor’s programs in visual semiotics in university sociology departments. and modern arts. She has directed master’s and doctoral theses in literary semiotics.

Statement

The team made up of Jacques Fontanille (France), Tiziana Migliore (Italy) and Nedret Kiliçeri Östokat (Turkiye), respectively candidates for the functions of President, Secretary General, Treasurer of the IASS-AIS, commits to the following terms.

We are committed to continuing and strengthening the actions carried out by the previous team in the following areas: (1) optimizing fundraising and seeking revenue from partner organizations, (2) developing the presence of the IASS-AIS on social networks, (3) create a database of major international semiotic research projects, carried out, in progress, or emerging, (4) encourage the organization and development of semiotics in the continents where it could improve its visibility, particularly in Africa, (5) support and increase, for the benefit of young researchers, opportunities for participation in collective research and publications, (6) establish partnerships with international academic and non-academic organizations, (7) increase the flow of internal communications addressed to members, (8) maintain and strengthen the favorable conditions obtained in the partnership with De Gruyter, (9) clarify and stabilize all the processes which democratically ensure the life of the association: electoral processes, decision-making processes, methods of choosing teams and organizing sites for congresses, and (10) continue all the provisions concerning publications under the aegis of the IASS-AIS.

Our team is committed to improving the diffusion of information and especially of the themes to be debated, by relying on the blog already attached to the IASS-AIS site, and by reconfiguring it to increase the number of exchanges and discussions. It will also endeavor to distribute among all members of the Bureau specific projects concerning in particular international partnerships, the careers of young researchers, but also the complementarity between the various methodological types and theoretical paradigms of semiotics, particularly in order to approach in the best conditions the major contemporary themes where the future of our planet and our societies are at stake.

Paul Cobley and Kristian Bankov, propose, on the IASS-AIS home page, four “future tasks” of the IASS-AIS: (1) “Organizing the 16TH WORLD CONGRESS OF SEMIOTICS 2024, UNIVERSITY OF WARSAW, POLAND . (2) Creating and supporting Special Interest Groups (SIG). (3) Developing IASS Early Career Researchers Network, (4) IASS publications”. The second and third tasks: (i) creating and supporting special interest groups, and (ii) developing the IASS network of young researchers are strongly linked. The “Special Interest Groups” (SIGs) project is not new, and it was dedicated to internal objectives of semiotics, in particular to better integrate the various theoretical currents and the different continents or countries of semiotics.

Our team will ensure that SIGs are more oriented outwards, towards the contemporary world, towards the major societal, civilizational and even existential issues of our time. SIGs could be open doors both to the more or less exciting advances in digital technologies, and to the dramatic prospects of international conflicts, or discrimination and global migrations. This would be another way of “making meaning” by doing semiotics.

This new orientation of SIGs would have direct consequences in the other future task, the development of the careers of young researchers in semiotics. By virtue of its extension to the living and to culture in general, a semiotics open to the world should enable new semioticians to find employment in all the institutional places where the future of our planet, our societies and our civilizations are at stake. In universities and research organizations, of course, but well beyond, in all the institutions and organizations that participate in decisions and programming concerning our collective future.

In all these major contemporary issues, peace and war, health, education, environment, aging populations, the spread of social and identity conflicts, the various uses and effects of social networks and AI generative, the share of the human and social sciences increases significantly, and that of semiotics is nevertheless still modest. This questioning leads us to develop “interest groups” with a view to tackling major social, human and environmental challenges. It is an invitation to think about the future of civilizations and human cultures and non-human from semiotics, and not only in the future of semiotics.

This orientation is of a strategic nature and therefore concerns most pragmatic and organizational  aspects of the IASS-AIS: (1) the choice of our international partners, including NGOs and companies, (2) support for interdisciplinary arrangements in which semiotics would take part, (3) the professional future of young semioticians, (4) the in-depth reflection that we should carry out both on maintaining the diversity of semiotics, and on their articulation around a small number of common issues.

Concerning the future of young researchers, professional opportunities in universities and research organizations are only part of the solutions available. When a research discipline is very active and attractive, it necessarily trains many more PhDs than those who are necessary for the renewal of generations in the research and teaching professions. Therefore, it cannot escape the obligation to define and prepare the integration of a high proportion of its PhDs into non-academic, but high-level, professional missions.

Finally, from the perspective of major contemporary societal issues, the other disciplines with which semiotics would deal, in multidisciplinary consortia, are not the disciplines closest to semiotics, quite the contrary. In the dialogue with them, belonging to this or that semiotic paradigm matters little: what matters is the ability to resolve the problems posed, the ability to vary points of view, angles of approach and scales of observation. This openness to major contemporary causes therefore requires us to keep and maintain our theoretical and methodological diversity. It follows that, in such an orientation, semiotics must be plural to be relevant and effective in problem solving.

Jacques Fontanille, pour le poste de Président

Jacques Fontanille est Professeur émérite de sémiotique à l’Université de Limoges et à l’Institut Universitaire de France. Il est également président d’honneur de l’Association Internationale de Sémiotique Visuelle, de l’Association Française de Sémiotique et de la Fédération Romaine de Sémiotique. De 2005 à 2012, il a été président de l’Université de Limoges, et de 2012 à 2014, directeur de cabinet du ministre de l’Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche.

Il a publié trois cents articles et livres, dans les domaines de la sémiotique théorique, de la sémiotique littéraire et visuelle, de la sémiotique des pratiques, de l’anthropologie sémiotique. Il a publié dix-sept ouvrages à titre individuel : Le Savoir Partagé / Les espaces subjectifs / The Semiotics of Passions / Semiotica de las pasiones. El séminario / Sémiotique du visible / Tension et signification / Sémiotique et littérature / La sémiotique du discours / Séma & Soma. La plupart de ses livres ont été traduits en anglais, espagnol, portugais, italien, russe, coréen, arabe, etc. Il a été professeur invité ou conférencier invité dans quatre-vingts universités américaines, européennes, asiatiques et africaines. La plupart de ses cinquante anciens doctorants occupent désormais des postes de professeur dans des universités en Europe, en Asie, en Afrique, en Amérique du Sud, aux États-Unis et au Canada. Enfin, il a été invité à donner une conférence plénière lors de chacun des cinq derniers congrès de l’IASS-AIS, à Nanjing, Sofia, Kaunas, Buenos Aires et Thessalonique.

Tiziana Migliore, pour le poste de Secrétaire Général

Nedret Kiliçeri Östokat, pour le poste de Trésorier

Nedret Kılıçeri Öztokat est professeure à l’Université d’Istanbul (Département de langue et littérature françaises). À l’université d’Istanbul, elle a été successivement nommée Maître de Conférences associé en 1997, Maître de Conférences en 1999 et Professeur en 2006.

Formée à l’école greimassienne, ses domaines de recherche et d’enseignement sont la sémiotique littéraire, la sémiotique urbaine, la sémiotique des conflits sociaux et politiques, la littérature du dix-neuvième siècle, critique littéraire et analyse du discours (littéraire, social et et visuel). Elle a fondé l’équipe Sémio-IST Turquie. Elle a été trésorière de la Fédération Romane de Sémiotique (2019-2023), et elle en est actuellement la secrétaire générale adjointe. Elle a organisé en 2019 à Istanbul le congrès international des sciences humaines et sociales, Congist’19, sur le thème de la Ville.

Elle est l’auteure des ouvrages : Le corps dans les contes fantastique et cruels de Maupassant, Istanbul University Press, 2021; Approches et méthodes dans l’analyse du discours littéraire, Ed. Elle a dirigé des thèses de master et de doctorat de sémiotique littéraire.

L’équipe constituée de Jacques Fontanille (France), Tiziana Migliore (Italie) et Nedret Kiliçeri Östokat (Turquie), respectivement candidats pour les fonctions de Président, Secrétaire Général, Trésorier de l’IASS-AIS, s’engage dans les termes suivants.

Nous nous engageons à poursuivre et renforcer les actions conduites par l’équipe précédente dans les domaines suivants : (1) l’optimisation de la collecte des fonds et la recherche de recettes auprès d’organismes partenaires, (2) développer la présence de l’IASS sur les réseaux sociaux, (3) créer une base de données des grands projets internationaux de recherches sémiotiques, réalisés, en cours, ou en émergence, (4) encourager l’organisation et le développement de la sémiotique dans les continents où elle pourrait améliorer sa visibilité, notamment en Afrique, (5) soutenir et augmenter, au bénéfice des jeunes chercheurs, les opportunités de participations à des recherches et des publications collectives, (6) établir des partenariats avec des organisations internationales universitaires et non universitaires, (7) augmenter le flux de communications internes adressées aux  membres, (8) maintenir et renforcer les conditions favorables obtenues dans le partenariat avec De Gruyter, (9) clarifier et stabiliser l’ensemble des processus qui assurent démocratiquement la vie de l’association : processus électoraux, processus de décisions, modalités du choix des équipes et sites organisateurs des congrès, et (10) poursuivre l’ensemble des dispositions concernant les publications sous l’égide de l’IASS-AIS.

Notre équipe s’engage à améliorer la diffusion des informations et surtout des thèmes à débattre, en s’appuyant sur le blog déjà rattaché au site de l’IASS-AIS, et en le reconfigurant pour augmenter le nombre des échanges et des discussions. Notre équipe fera en sorte que les SIG soient plus orientés vers l’extérieur, vers le monde contemporain, vers les grandes problématiques sociétales, civilisationnelles, et même existentielles de notre temps. Les SIG pourraient être des portes ouvertes aussi bien sur les avancées plus ou moins enthousiasmantes des technologies numériques, que sur les perspectives dramatiques des conflits internationaux, ou des discriminations et des migrations mondiales. Ce serait une autre manière de « faire sens » en faisant de la sémiotique.

Cette nouvelle orientation des SIG aurait des conséquences directes dans l’autre tâche future, le développement des carrières des jeunes chercheurs en sémiotique. En raison même de son extension au vivant et au culturel en général, la sémiotique ouverte sur le monde doit permettre aux nouveaux sémioticiens de trouver à s’employer dans tous les lieux institutionnels où l’avenir de notre planète, de nos sociétés et de nos civilisations sont en jeu. Dans les universités et les organismes de recherches, bien entendu, mais bien au-delà, dans toutes les institutions et organismes qui participent aux décisions et aux programmations concernant notre avenir collectif.

Dans toutes ces grandes problématiques contemporaines, la paix et la guerre, la santé, l’éducation, l’environnement, le vieillissement des populations, la dissémination des conflits sociaux et identitaires, les divers usages et effets des réseaux sociaux et de l’IA générative, la part des sciences humaines et sociales augmente significativement, et celle de la sémiotique y est pourtant encore modeste. On comprend qu’à partir de ce questionnement, nous soyons incités à faire évoluer les « groupes d’intérêt » en visant de grands défis sociaux, humains ou environnementaux, C’est une invitation à penser l’avenir des civilisations et des cultures humaines et non-humaines à partir de la sémiotique, et pas seulement à l’avenir de la sémiotique.

Cette orientation a un caractère stratégique et elle concerne donc la plupart des sujets concrets et organisationnels de l’IASS-AIS : (1) le choix de nos partenaires internationaux, y compris ONG et entreprises, (2) le soutien aux montages interdisciplinaires auxquels la sémiotique prendrait part, (3) l’avenir professionnel des jeunes sémioticiens, (4) la réflexion de fond que nous devrions conduire à la fois sur le maintien de la diversité des sémiotiques, et sur leur articulation autour d’un petit nombre de problématiques communes. 

Concernant l’avenir des jeunes chercheurs, les débouchés professionnels dans les universités et les organismes de recherche ne sont qu’une partie des solutions disponibles. Quand une discipline de recherche est très active et attractive, elle forme obligatoirement beaucoup plus de docteurs que ceux qui sont nécessaires au renouvellement des générations dans les métiers de la recherche et de l’enseignement. Donc elle ne peut échapper à l’obligation de définir et de préparer l’insertion d’une forte proportion de ses docteurs dans des missions professionnelles non académiques, mais de haut niveau.

Enfin, dans la perspective des grandes problématiques sociétales contemporaines, les autres disciplines auxquelles la sémiotique aurait affaire, dans les consortia pluridisciplinaires, ne sont pas les disciplines les plus proches de la sémiotique, tout au contraire. Dans le dialogue avec elles, l’appartenance à tel ou tel paradigme sémiotique importe peu : seule importe la capacité à résoudre les problèmes posés, la capacité à faire varier les points de vue, les angles d’approche et les échelles d’observation. Cette ouverture sur les grandes causes contemporaines nous impose donc le maintien et l’entretien de notre diversité théorique et méthodologique. Il en résulte que, dans une telle orientation, la sémiotique doit être plurielle pour être pertinente et efficace dans la résolution de problèmes.

Jacques Fontanille es Profesor emérito de semiótica en la Universidad de Limoges y en el Instituto Universitario de Francia. Nedret Kiliçeri Östokat, candidata al cargo de Tesorera

Nedret Kılıçeri Öztokat es Profesora en la Universidad de Estambul (Departamento de Lengua y Literatura Francesa). En la Universidad de Estambul, fue nombrada sucesivamente profesora asociada en 1997 y profesora en 2006.

Formada en la escuela Greimassiana, sus áreas de investigación y docencia son la semiótica literaria, la semiótica urbana, la semiótica de los conflictos sociales y políticos, la literatura del siglo XIX, la crítica literaria y el análisis del discurso (literario, social y visual). Fundó el equipo Sémio-IST Türkiye. Fue tesorera de la Fédération Romane de Semiotique (2019-2023) y actualmente es su secretaria general adjunta. En 2019 organizó en Estambul el congreso internacional de ciencias humanas y sociales, Congist’19, sobre el tema de la Ciudad.

Es autora de las obras: El cuerpo en los cuentos fantásticos y crueles de Maupassant, Istanbul University Press, 2021; Enfoques y métodos en el análisis del discurso literario, Ed. Participó en congresos y conferencias internacionales de semiótica organizados en Francia, Turquía e Italia, publicó numerosos artículos semióticos y contribuyó al desarrollo de programas de licenciatura en semiótica visual en departamentos universitarios de sociología y artes modernas. Ha dirigido tesis de maestría y doctorado en semiótica literaria.

Declaración

El equipo formado por Jacques Fontanille (Francia), Tiziana Migliore (Italia) y Nedret Kiliçeri Östokat (Turquía), respectivamente candidatos a las funciones de Presidente, Secretario General y Tesorero de la IASS-AIS, se compromete a los siguientes términos.

Nos comprometemos a continuar y fortalecer las acciones llevadas a cabo por el equipo anterior en las siguientes áreas: (1) optimizar la recaudación de fondos y buscar ingresos de las organizaciones asociadas, (2) desarrollar la presencia de la IASS en las redes sociales, (3) crear una base de datos de los principales proyectos internacionales de investigación semiótica, realizados, en curso o emergentes, (4) fomentar la organización y el desarrollo de la semiótica en los continentes donde podría mejorar su visibilidad, particularmente en África, (5) apoyar y aumentar, por ejemplo el beneficio de los jóvenes investigadores, oportunidades de participación en investigaciones y publicaciones colectivas, (6) establecer asociaciones con organizaciones académicas y no académicas internacionales, (7) aumentar el flujo de comunicaciones internas dirigidas a los miembros, (8) mantener y fortalecer las condiciones favorables obtenidas en la asociación con De Gruyter, (9) aclarar y estabilizar todos los procesos que aseguran democráticamente la vida de la asociación: procesos electorales, procesos de toma de decisiones, métodos de la elección de los equipos y los sitios que organizarán los congresos, y (10) continuar todas las disposiciones relativas a las publicaciones bajo los auspicios de la IASS-AIS.

Nuestro equipo se compromete a mejorar la difusión de la información y, especialmente, de los temas a debatir, apoyándose en el blog ya adjunto al sitio IASS-AIS y reconfigurarlo para aumentar el número de intercambios y discusiones. También se esforzará en distribuir entre todos los miembros de la Mesa directiva proyectos específicos que se refieran, en particular, a las asociaciones internacionales, a las carreras de los jóvenes investigadores, pero también a la complementariedad entre los distintos tipos metodológicos y paradigmas teóricos de la semiótica, en particular para abordar en las mejores condiciones los grandes temas contemporáneos en los que está en juego el futuro de nuestro planeta y de nuestras sociedades.

Paul Cobley y Kristian Bankov proponen, en la página de inicio de IASS-AIS, cuatro “tareas futuras” de IASS-AIS: (1) “Organizar el 16º CONGRESO MUNDIAL DE SEMIÓTICA 2024, UNIVERSIDAD DE VARSOVIA, POLONIA. (2) Crear y apoyar Grupos de Interés Especial (SIG). (3) Desarrollo de la Red de Investigadores de Carrera Temprana de IASS, (4) Publicaciones de IASS”. Las tareas segunda y tercera: (i) crear y apoyar grupos de intereses especiales, y (ii) desarrollar la red IASS de jóvenes investigadores están fuertemente vinculadas. El proyecto “Special Interest Groups” (SIG) no es nuevo y estaba dedicado a objetivos internos de la semiótica, en particular a integrar mejor las diversas corrientes teóricas y los diferentes continentes o países de la semiótica.

Nuestro equipo se asegurará de que los SIG estén más orientados hacia el exterior, hacia el mundo contemporáneo, hacia las principales cuestiones sociales, de civilización e incluso existenciales de nuestro tiempo. Los SIG podrían ser puertas abiertas tanto a los avances más o menos interesantes de las tecnologías digitales como a las dramáticas perspectivas de conflictos internacionales, o discriminación y migraciones globales. Ésta sería otra manera de “dar sentido” haciendo semiótica.

Esta nueva orientación de los SIG tendría consecuencias directas en la otra tarea futura, el desarrollo de las carreras de jóvenes investigadores en semiótica. Debido a su extensión a la vida y a la cultura en general, la semiótica abierta al mundo debe permitir a los nuevos semióticos encontrar empleo en todos los lugares institucionales donde el futuro de nuestro planeta, de nuestras sociedades y de nuestras civilizaciones está en juego. En universidades y organizaciones de investigación, por supuesto, pero mucho más allá, en todas las instituciones y organizaciones que participan en las decisiones y programas relacionados con nuestro futuro colectivo.

En todos estos importantes temas contemporáneos, la paz y la guerra, la salud, la educación, el medio ambiente, el envejecimiento de la población, la propagación de los conflictos sociales y de identidad, los diversos usos y efectos de las redes sociales y la IA generativa, aumenta significativamente la participación de las ciencias humanas y sociales; sin embargo, la participación de la semiótica es todavía modesto. Entendemos que a partir de este cuestionamiento nos animamos a hacer evolucionar “grupos de interés” apuntando a los grandes desafíos sociales, humanos o ambientales. Es una invitación a pensar el futuro de las civilizaciones y de las culturas humanas y no humanas desde la semiótica, y no sólo en el futuro de la semiótica.

Esta orientación es de carácter estratégico y, por tanto, concierne a temas más concretos y organizativos aspectos de la IASS-AIS: (1) la elección de nuestros socios internacionales, incluidas ONG y empresas, (2) el apoyo a acuerdos interdisciplinarios en los que la semiótica participaría, (3) el futuro profesional de los jóvenes semióticos, (4) la reflexión en profundidad que debemos realizar tanto sobre el mantenimiento de la diversidad de la semiótica, como sobre su articulación en torno a un pequeño número de cuestiones comunes.

En cuanto al futuro de los jóvenes investigadores, las oportunidades profesionales en universidades y organizaciones de investigación son sólo una parte de las soluciones disponibles. Cuando una disciplina investigadora es muy activa y atractiva, necesariamente forma muchos más doctores de los necesarios para la renovación generacional en las profesiones investigadora y docente. Por tanto, no puede eludir la obligación de definir y preparar la integración de una elevada proporción de sus doctores en misiones profesionales no académicas, pero de alto nivel.

Finalmente, desde la perspectiva de las principales cuestiones sociales contemporáneas, las otras disciplinas con las que se ocuparía la semiótica, en consorcios multidisciplinarios, no son las disciplinas más cercanas a la semiótica, sino todo lo contrario. En el diálogo con ellos poco importa pertenecer a tal o cual paradigma semiótico: lo que importa es la capacidad de resolver los problemas planteados, la capacidad de variar puntos de vista, ángulos de aproximación y escalas de observación. Esta apertura a las grandes causas contemporáneas nos exige, por tanto, guardar y mantener nuestra diversidad teórica y metodológica. De ello se deduce que, en tal orientación, la semiótica debe ser plural para ser relevante y eficaz en la resolución de problemas.
