The Gatherings in Biosemiotics is the annual meeting for the study of sign processes in life processes. Researchers interested in the intersection of meaning-making and biology are the backbone of our interdisciplinary undertaking, and we welcome thoughtful submissions from scholars in any discipline relevant to a deeper understanding of the role of signs in life.
Held under the auspices of the International Society for Biosemiotic Studies, the Society has decided that, due to the ongoing uncertainties of the current Covid-19 situation, we must be maximally flexible in our arrangements this year. Accordingly, we will be attempting to host a hybrid conference with that will take place primarily online, with the possibility of a small in-person component in Stockholm, Sweden for those participants who wish to, and are able to, travel there. The dates for the conference will be Monday 26 July to Thursday 29 July 2021, and more information about both the online and the (possible) in-person component will be made available after the abstract selection process has been completed.
We particularly welcome conference presentations in the following research areas:
· Biosemiotic approaches to biology
· The implications of biosemiotics to philosophy and the humanities
· History and epistemology of biosemiotics
· Semiotic approaches in theoretical biology
· Evolution and ontogeny of semiotic mechanisms
· Modelling of semiosis and semiotic networks
· Interspecies semiosis
· Experimental biosemiotics
· Biosemiotics of health and disease
· Umwelt studies and phenomenology
· Cultural implications of biosemiotics
Abstracts should be 300-600 words, with your full name, email address and affiliation below the title, and submitted as single-space, single page files in the doc, docx, rtf, or odt formats (please do not send PDFs), with a maximum of three references permitted. All abstracts should be submitted to the following address: firstname.lastname@example.org and received no later than 1 June 2021. Please filename the document with your surname in capital letters, for example: SEBEOK.doc.
Please also indicate in the body text of the email that you send to us whether you (a) most likely will be (b) most likely will not be or (c) are still undecided about attending the small in-person contingent of presenters meeting together during the conference in Sweden.
The tentative notification of acceptance date will be 7 June 2021.
