Curriculum vitae

Karin Boklund-Lagopoulou is Professor Emerita of the School of English, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, where she taught medieval and Renaissance literature and literary theory and was for many years responsible for postgraduate programs in European Literature and Culture and Translation and Interpretation, as well as in English language and literature. She has been visiting researcher at the Research Center for Language and Semiotic Studies of Indiana University, the Center for Medieval Studies of UCLA, and the English Institute of the University of Uppsala, and has taught in the Early Fall School of Semiotics of New Bulgarian University. She is a founding member of the Hellenic Semiotic Society, of which she was Secretary for many years, and has long experience in organizing congresses and symposia. She is a member of the IASS-AIS Collegium and acts as its coordinator and secretary; she also regularly teaches a course in Narratology Across the Media for the postgraduate program in Semiotics, Culture and Communication at Aristotle University.

Her publications include a monograph, I Have a Yong Suster: Popular Song and the Middle English Lyric, several edited volumes, special issues of journals such as Semiotica and Punctum, and papers on literary theory, medieval literature and popular culture published in Greek, European and American journals and collective volumes; her interest in popular culture stems from the frequent presence of medieval motifs in fantasy literature, science fiction, film and television. She often collaborates with her husband; they have co-authored Meaning and Geography: The Social Conception of the Region in Northern Greece and Theory and Methodology of Semiotics: The Tradition of Ferdinand de Saussure (in Greek and English). Together with Mark Gottdiener, they edited the anthology Semiotics for the series Sage Benchmarks in Social Research Methods. Their latest project is a collective volume on the semiotics of images.   

Statement

I am posing my candidacy for Vice President for Europe because I am deeply committed to the discipline of semiotics. I believe in the role of semiotics as a way of understanding ourselves, our cultures and our world, and I believe it is essential for our Association to continue to support and promote this.

To this end, if elected, I will work to continue and extend our present efforts in the areas of:

• Diversity: to maintain dialogue and interaction between all traditions in semiotics and to encourage communication and collaboration between semiotics and related fields.

• Mutuality: to support semiotic institutions and research in all geographical areas, to encourage the formation of special interest groups and to assist young researchers in their research and career ambitions.

• Transparency: to maintain the democratic and representative nature of our national and international institutions.

• Scholarship: to promote the teaching of semiotics on all levels, for example by creating a European network of semiotic laboratories and research centers, and to recognize scientific achievement and excellence in our field.

Karin Boklund-Lagopoulou est Professeur Émérite du Département de Langue et de Littérature Anglaises de l’Université Aristote de Thessalonique, en Grèce, où elle a enseigné la littérature du Moyen Age et de la Renaissance ainsi que la théorie littéraire et a été pendant de nombreuses années responsable des programmes de troisième cycle en Littérature et Culture Européennes et en Traduction et Interprétation, ainsi qu’en Langue et Littérature Anglaises. Elle a été chercheure invité au Research Center for Language and Semiotic Studies de l’Université d’Indiana, au Center for Medieval Studies de l’UCLA et à l’Institut d’Anglais de l’Université d’Uppsala, et a enseigné à l Early Fall School of Semiotics de la New Bulgarian University. Elle est membre fondateur de la Société Hellénique de Sémiotique, dont elle a été secrétaire pendant de nombreuses années, et possède une longue expérience dans l’organisation de congrès et de symposiums. Elle est membre du Collegium de l’IASS-AIS, dont elle est la coordinatrice et la secrétaire ; elle donne régulièrement un cours sur la Narratologie Intermédiale dans le cadre du programme de master conjoint en Sémiotique, Culture et Communication de l’Université Aristote de Thessalonique.

Elle a publié une monographie intitulée I Have a Yong Suster : Popular Song and the Middle English Lyric, plusieurs volumes édités, des numéros spéciaux de revues telles que Semiotica et Punctum, et des articles sur la théorie littéraire, la littérature médiévale et la culture populaire publiés dans des revues et des volumes collectifs grecs, européens et américains ; son intérêt pour la culture populaire découle de la présence fréquente de motifs médiévaux dans la littérature fantastique, la science-fiction, le cinéma et la télévision. Elle collabore souvent avec son mari ; ils ont coécrit Meaning and Geography : The Social Conception of the Region in Northern Greece et Theory and Methodology of Semiotics : The Tradition of Ferdinand de Saussure (en grec et en anglais). Avec Mark Gottdiener, ils ont édité l’anthologie Semiotics pour la série Sage Benchmarks in Social Research Methods. Leur dernier projet est un volume collectif sur la sémiotique des images.  

Déclaration

Je pose ma candidature au poste de Vice-président pour l’Europe parce que je suis profondément attaché à la discipline de la sémiotique. Je crois au rôle de la sémiotique comme moyen de compréhension de nous-mêmes, de nos cultures et de notre monde, et je pense qu’il est essentiel pour notre association de continuer à la soutenir et à la promouvoir.

Dans ce but, si je suis élue, je m’efforcerai de poursuivre et d’étendre nos efforts actuels dans les domaines suivants :

– Diversité : maintenir le dialogue et l’interaction entre toutes les traditions de la sémiotique et encourager la communication et la collaboration entre la sémiotique et les domaines connexes.

– Mutualité : soutenir les institutions sémiotiques et la recherche dans toutes les zones géographiques, encourager la formation de groupes d’intérêt spéciaux et aider les jeunes chercheurs dans leurs ambitions de recherche et de carrière.

– Transparence : maintenir la nature démocratique et représentative de nos institutions nationales et internationales.

– Enseignement : promouvoir l’enseignement de la sémiotique à tous les niveaux, par exemple en créant un réseau européen de laboratoires et centres de recherche sémiotiques, et reconnaître les réalisations scientifiques et l’excellence dans notre domaine.

Ha sido investigadora visitante en el Research Center for Language and Semiotic Studies de la Universidad de Indiana, el Center for Medieval Studies de UCLA y el English Institute de la Universidad de Uppsala, y ha impartido clases en la Early Fall School of Semiotics de la New Bulgarian University. Es miembro fundador de la Sociedad Helénica de Semiótica, de la que fue Secretaria durante muchos años, y tiene una larga experiencia en la organización de congresos y simposios. Colabora a menudo con su marido; han sido coautores de Meaning and Geography: The Social Conception of the Region in Northern Greece y Theory and Methodology of Semiotics: The Tradition of Ferdinand de Saussure (en griego e inglés). Junto con Mark Gottdiener, editaron la antología Semiotics para la serie Sage Benchmarks in Social Research Methods. Su último proyecto es un volumen colectivo sobre la semiótica de las imágenes.  

Declaración

Presento mi candidatura a Vicepresidente para Europa porque estoy profundamente comprometido con la disciplina de la semiótica. Creo en el papel de la semiótica como forma de comprendernos a nosotros mismos, a nuestras culturas y a nuestro mundo, y considero esencial que nuestra Asociación siga apoyándola y promoviéndola.

Con este fin, si soy elegida, trabajaré para continuar y ampliar nuestros esfuerzos actuales en las áreas de:

– Diversidad: para mantener el diálogo y la interacción entre todas las tradiciones de la semiótica y fomentar la comunicación y la colaboración entre la semiótica y los campos relacionados.

– Mutualidad: apoyar a las instituciones semióticas y la investigación en todas las áreas geográficas, fomentar la formación de grupos de interés especial y ayudar a los jóvenes investigadores en sus ambiciones de investigación y carrera.

– Transparencia: mantener la naturaleza democrática y representativa de nuestras instituciones nacionales e internacionales.

– Enseñanza: promover la enseñanza de la semiótica a todos los niveles, por ejemplo creando una red europea de laboratorios y centros de investigación semióticos, y reconocer los logros científicos y la excelencia en nuestro campo.
