17th World Congress of Semiotics: Call for Panels and Papers
Dear colleagues, we are pleased to announce the Call for Papers and Panels for the 17th World Congress of Semiotics.
Territorios semióticos: Saberes y caminos en la creación” (Semiotic Territories: Knowledge and Paths in Creation) is the title of the 17th World Congress of Semiotics. This IASS-AIS congress will be held in Cali, Colombia, from July 26 to 30, 2027, at the Instituto Departamental de Bellas Artes; it is organized under the leadership of Germán García Orozco and thanks to the team he has assembled. This congress is conceived around the notion of “territory” which—through dialogue among individuals, communities, and institutions, and via semiotic reflection and analysis—enables a cross-fertilization between academic research, socio-cultural and political commitments, indigenous practices and cultures, and creative work of international scope. In an increasingly unjust and divided world, semiotics is called upon to renew its theories, methods, and objects of study. It must evolve into a guiding discipline capable of inspiring and establishing foundations for fairer policies, as well as creating meaningful forms that foster better, happier lives. In doing so, semiotics will project and cultivate more responsible visions and understandings of territories, in every sense of the word: approaches that are attentive to the most vulnerable, oriented toward “care” and the ethics of maintenance, and committed to the physical and mental well-being of people. We look forward to receiving your proposals aimed at exploring and enhancing these territories of meaning—territories that belong to no one, yet to which we all belong.
The 17th IASS-AIS World Congress is organized by the Instituto Departamental de Bellas Artes in Cali, a university where research and creative practice are closely intertwined. This event offers an exceptional opportunity to showcase a diverse range of approaches and objectives for conducting and presenting researches. In many countries and universities, specific doctoral programs are now dedicated—within an academic framework—to research-through-creation and creation-through-research. Consequently, three modes of participation are proposed under the umbrella of “spaces for academic engagement”: 1) Research symposiums and panels, 2) Research-creation, and 3) Encounter Labs.

- Deadline for submissions for academic participation spaces: October 31, 2026.
- Notification of results: November 1–15, 2026.
- Call for individual papers opens: November 16, 2026.
- Deadline for paper submissions: January 31, 2027.
- Notification of results: March 1–15, 2027.
- Publication of the preliminary program: April 1, 2027.
- 17th World Congress of Semiotics 2027: July 26–30, 2027.
