Il volto infinito offers an interdisciplinary exploration of the face in contemporary digital societies, combining perspectives from semiotics, philosophy, aesthetics, and media studies. Emerging from the ERC-funded FACETS project, this volume analyzes the transformations of the face in the age of artificial intelligence, virtual environments, and posthuman imaginaries. Through contributions from various scholars, it examines the tensions between materiality and immateriality, identity and alterity, ritual repetition and algorithmic variation. The face is presented not merely as a biological or iconographic entity, but as a dynamic space where cultural, technological, and ethical relations unfold. Between permanence and metamorphosis, between ritual and simulation, this book reveals how the face—despite being multiplied and altered by contemporary technologies—remains a central site for meaning-making and encounters with the Other.
