Adrián Gimate-Welsh (1943-2019)

The International Association for Semiotic Studies – IASS / AIS announces with sadness that Mexican researcher and semiotician Dr. Adrián Sergio Gimate-Welsh Hernández, from Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-Iztapalapa, has recently passed away.

Adrián Gimate-Welsh: from birth to the continuity of semiotics in Mexico

On 13 October 2019 Mexican linguist Adrián Gimate-Welsh died. His legacy to the student of semiotics in Mexico is directly linked to the nascent state of the discipline in the country. Coming from the area of literature and linguistics, with his training in the doctorate at the Center for Linguistic and Literary Studies of the College of Mexico, Gimate-Welsh approached semiotics during the period of semiotics’ period of high profile fashionability. His time at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., already marked his interest in linguistics, rhetoric and argumentation. Professor Gimate-Welsh distinguished his university career by pursuing the development, teaching and dissemination of semiotics in Mexico, his main heritage to the academic community. Different athenaeums witnessed his career: the Benemérita Autonomous University of Puebla, the Technological University of Berlin, the University of Arizona, the University of Rosario in Argentina, among others, until he held the position of full-time professor and researcher at the University Autonomous Metropolitan, on the Iztapalapa campus, where he worked until his death.

He held the life president post in the Mexican Association of Semiotics and, with that position, organized the 6th World Congress of the International Association of Semiotics in the city of Guadalajara in 1997, in addition to a series of national congresses with topics such as metaphor, the argument, and so on. He was also a committed promoter of the inclusion of Spanish-Castilian as the official language of semiotics associations and actively participated in the formation of the Latin American Federation of Semiotics and in the foundation of the Designis Revue. Although his last years were dedicated to the review of studies of comparative political systems, his most recent semiotically-orientated publication was in 2013 with the title Argumentation, edited by the Autonomous Metropolitan University. Adrián Gimate-Welsh will be remembered for his work in associations, in dissemination of semiotics and in his love of semiotic discipline, of which he was an important promoter in his academic life.

Adrián Gimate-Welsh: del nacimiento a la continuidad de la semiótica en México

El pasado 13 de octubre 2019 falleció el lingüista mexicano Adrián Gimate-Welsh. El legado del estudioso a la semiótica en México se vincula directamente con el estado naciente de la disciplina en el país. Proveniente del área de la literatura y la lingüística y de su formación en el doctorado en el Centro de Estudios Lingüísticos y Literarios del Colegio de México, Gimate-Welsh se aproximó a la semiótica en la etapa de mayor entusiasmo por los logros alcanzados en los años iniciales y de mayor efervescencia de la disciplina. Su paso por la Universidad de Georgetown en Washington, D.C. marcó ya su interés por la lingüística, la retórica y la argumentación. El profesor Gimate-Welsh fincó su carrera universitaria al seguir como objetivo el desarrollo, la enseñanza y la difusión de la semiótica en México, su principal herencia a la comunidad académica. Distintos ateneos fueron testigos de su trayectoria: la Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, la Universidad Tecnológica de Berlín, la Universidad de Arizona, la Universidad de Rosario en Argentina, entre otras, hasta ocupar el cargo de profesor e investigador de tiempo completo en la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, en el campus Iztapalapa, donde trabajó hasta su fallecimiento.

Ocupó el puesto vitalicio de presidente de la Asociación Mexicana de Semiótica y, con ese cargo, organizó el 6° Congreso Mundial de la Asociación Internacional de Semiótica en la ciudad de Guadalajara en 1997, además de una serie de congresos nacionales con temas como la metáfora, la argumentación, etcétera. Fue además un comprometido promotor de la inclusión del español-castellano como lengua oficial de las asociaciones de semiótica y participó activamente en la formación de la Federación Latinoamericana de Semiótica y en la fundación de la Revista deSignis. Aunque sus últimos años los dedicó a la revisión de los estudios de los sistemas políticos comparados, su publicación de orientación semiótica más reciente fue en 2013 con el título La Argumentación, editado por la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana. Adrián Gimate-Welsh será recordado entonces por su trabajo en las asociaciones, en la divulgación y en el cariño a la disciplina semiótica, de la cual fue un importante promotor en su vida académica.`

I deeply regret the loss of a colleague who worked semiotics in ways as creative as the metaphorical political relationship. Someone who walked in search of the alternative discourses of Latin American politics like when he came in search of the voices of the indigenous movements of Latin America, which by the way, now in Ecuador, have shown that power also passes through the community solidarity that it finds welcome in multicultural towns and nationalities.
I was fortunate to meet him in these field works and learn in his subtle way of sharing his knowledge and entering the hearts of people, always so amble, elegant and friendly. An example that sensitivity, intelligence, and solidarity must be part of trans-human semiotic ethics.
